I'm trying to pick about 10-12 books for my brother's Xmas present. I want sci-fi and fantasy, and I'd like solid, classic and/or cultish books.
I'm picking books by different authors, because the point is to introduce him to a large sample of authors. And I want books that are complete by themselves, not part of a series.
I've already those picked out:
- Mary Shelley - Frankenstein
- Bram Stoker - Dracula
- Neil Gaiman & Terry Pratchett - Good Omens
- Ray Bradbury - Fahrenheit 451
- Fredric Brown - Martians, go home
I'd like one title each by Robert Silverberg and Roger Zelazny -- and I can't use Majipoor or Amber per my own rules -- as well as Asimov. I'd love it if I could include a couple of French authors, but I'm not sure where to start :/ Also, this list is nearly all sf, and I'd like to include some fantasy.
In case you're wondering, he's already read Tolkien and Bujold, hence why it's not on the list.

It's a bit short on fantasy, but I can do that next year ;)

I had a choice of two meetings tonight. The City Council was holding a VERY IMPORTANT MEETING to discuss a controversy with the Mayor. While I have disagreed with him on several points, I do consider him the best mayor we've had in years and the smartest by a long shot. I should have shown up and shown my support. At the same time, a board and then regular meeting for the amateur theater group of which I have been a member since before I was born. Seriously. My mother was appearing in "Harvey" when she found out she was pregnant with me. MAJOR DECISIONS to be made about seeking a theater. It is twelve below zero and snowing. I sat on the couch, under blankets, with the cat on my lap and drank tea, ate shortbread and watched junk on television. I am a BAD GIRL. But a warm one!
